Abstract
Does thinking of dance conjure images of young girls in pink tights and tutus? Dance serves a role that eclipses the Saturday morning ballet classes and dance recitals. During dynamic change and ambiguity, the arts can inform, heal, and be a catalyst for change and building understanding. Dance has been used for protest, reconciliation, peace-building, and cross-cultural connection since ancient times. Bridging the gap of culture and language, movement art creates connections and common ground through narratives and emotions, creating shared experiences that build empathy and understanding. This article outlines the ways in which dance can be used for protest during times of verbal suppression, preserve identity, provide for healing, support cross-cultural dialogue, lend to conflict resolution, and be an instrument for peace.
