Abstract

The impact of geopolitics on business is increasingly significant globally. Geopolitical events, whether in the form of changing alliances, sanctions, conflicts or trade dynamics through international business, have turned old business models upside down. At the same time, they have also provided a source of opportunities. In the case of West African Agro-allied manufacturing and associated supply chain sector, these disruptions are crucial to comprehend and navigate in order to not only survive but also prosper in a changing global economy.

This article examines the challenges and opportunities presented by the ever-changing geopolitical landscape, offering insights for businesses on how to respond to these uncertain times. Examining how supply shocks, stringent new global and regional regulations, and shifting trade alliances are disrupting operations across the West African Agro-allied manufacturing value chain highlights the practical implications of these pressures on manufacturers and suppliers, including higher production costs, compliance burdens and market access risks. Attention will be given to the vulnerabilities of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in this industry, which often lack the resources to adapt quickly to these geopolitical changes.
