Abstract
Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) have emerged as critical elements in Australia and Canada, that help shape organisational culture and organisational performance. Diversity encompasses the representation of various demographic groups ranging from race and sexual orientation to disability and age. Equity refers to the establishment of equal treatment and access to opportunities and resources. Inclusion involves the development of an environment that promotes individuality, i.e. ensuring all individuals feel welcomed and valued. In recent years, DEI has shaped policy development significantly in the healthcare, education and corporate sectors. Scholars indicate that employees may experience discrimination of varying degrees and, in some cases, across their intersecting identities like race, gender and class. Exploring the role of intersectionality (overlapping social inequalities) within DEI is critical in addressing inequities in organisations. Using real-world examples from Australia and Canada, this article explores the role of DEI initiatives, their challenges and their significance in shaping organisational success and enhancing workplace culture and societal cohesion.
