Abstract

History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes. - Mark Twain

In moments of global upheaval, we often look forward, towards policy, innovation, and reform. However, leadership, especially during a crisis, is a discipline shaped as much by hindsight as foresight. The challenges of the 2020s, from pandemics to political polarisation, bear a striking resemblance to those of a century ago. Spanish Flu echoes through COVID-19, wartime resilience resurfaces in today’s geopolitical conflicts, and economic collapses repeat with alarming familiarity.

These repetitions are more than a coincidence. They are reminders that success leaves clues and that certain leadership traits consistently rise to the surface when uncertainty reigns. This article explores those clues through a historical lens, drawing lessons from leaders past and present to understand what constitutes truly adaptive leadership in uncertain times.
