Abstract
This chapter explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, focusing on the impacts of generative artificial intelligence and large language models. With AI’s rapid adoption across many sectors, the education landscape faces a dual challenge: harnessing AI’s capabilities for enhancing learning experiences while mitigating potential disruptions to the acquisition of traditional skills. Grounded in constructivist learning theory, this chapter explores how considered integration of AI can support authentic, active learning by fostering student engagement and collaboration within social and cultural contexts. Through a detailed examination of AI applications—such as intelligent tutoring systems, automated assessments and AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants—the chapter outlines both opportunities and ethical considerations, such as privacy concerns, algorithmic bias and the need to balance human interaction and AI-driven instruction. This exploration aims to guide educators and institutions in leveraging AI responsibly, ensuring that it enhances rather than detracts from the educational experience. By critically assessing AI’s role through a constructivist lens, the chapter positions AI as a powerful ally in preparing students for a dynamic, digital future.
